SOMNATH TEMPLE TO BE REBUILT

Standing amidst the ruins of the famous temple of Somnath. During his visit to Kathiawar, in connection with the Junagadh State's preservation from anarchy by the Indian Dominion. Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel declared last week that the temple would be re-constructed and the image of Somnath reinstalled in the same site, where they stood when Mahomed Ghazni sacked and looted one thousand years ago. This act of vandalism which professor Habib has condemned as an act of avarice under the cloak of religion, was a wrong both to Islam and to Hinduism-more to Islam than to Hinduism. The restoration of the temple and the re-installation of the image will be a tardy atonement. But no one with a park of historic feeling, can fail to be thrilled by the declaration of the Sardar with whom were Mr. N. V. Gadgil, Minister of Public works in the Government of India, and the Jamasaheib of Nawanagar in whose territory Patan is situated. The outstanding movement of the last century and a half is the revival of Hinduism and the reconstruction of the Somnath Temple will be a fitting climax to it. It should not cost the State a single pice. Hindus all over India will gladly contribute the necessary funds. Broad minded Muslims, too will co-operate in redeeming their great religion from an infamy which the Ghazni-vites greed has associated with it in the popular mind.

It is hardly possible to exaggerate the work done by Sardar Patel for the achievement of Indian freedom and even more for its consolidation. In the fateful years of 1947 to 1950, it was his strong will that maintained the peace of India, integrated the States and got the Constitution successfully through the Constituent Assembly.

I therefore feel it a high privilege to send my respectful homage to the great nation builder.

પટેલ કોણ? જેને ગામ પસંદ કરે તે પટેલ થાય. પટેલથી તે સરકારની પાંચ રૂપિયાના પગારની નોકરી કરાતી હશે? એ કરતા આબરૂભરી મજુરી કરો તોયે રોજના છ આઠ આના મળે. ગામના પટેલનું કામ તે સરકારી નોકરની ખીદમત કરવાનુંને એને ખવડાવવાનું કદી હોતુ હશે? મામલતદારનો ઉતારો તો ચોરેજ હોય. પૈસા ખર્ચી ખર્ચી આપણને બધુ મળે છે તેમ એનેયે બજારમાંથી જે જોઈએ તે મળી શકે છે. પણ આપણે ખુશામતનો ઉંધો રસ્તો લીધો છે. સાચા પટેલો તો તકીએ બેસેને મામલતદાર તેની સામો બેસે. ગામનું કામ પટેલ કહે તેમ થાય. પાકની આની પટેલ આઠ આની લખાવે ને મામલતદારને બાર આની લાગે તોયે પટેલનોજ સીક્કો ચાલે. તેને બદલે આજ તો હારતોરા લઈ એની પાછળ ફરો છો. હાડકાના ટુકડા ઉપર પડાપડી કરો છો. બારડોલીના ખેડુતો એ મોહ તરી ગયા છે ને આજે ત્યાના પટેલને કોઈ દબાવવા જાય છે તો ફટ રાજીનામુ લખી આપે છે.

વીર વિઠ્ઠલભાઈની ગર્જનાઓ પુસ્તકમાં એક રસપ્રદ વાત વાંચી જાણવા જેવી છે.

હું આપણા સરકારી નોકરો, પોલીસ અને લશ્કરના માણસો બીજા જેટલા આપણા, હિંદુ, મુસલમાન, શીખ, પારસી જેઓ સરકારી નોકરીમાં હોય તેમને અપીલ કરૂ છું કે જો તેઓ ભવિષ્યમાં હિંદુસ્તાનની સ્વતંત્રતાની લડતમાં "ટ્રેટર્સ" તરીકે ખપવા ન માગતા હોય તો સ્વદેશીને અનુસરે. હું રાજીનામું આપવાનું કહેતો નથી. પણ જેને ઝાળ લાગી હોય તે તો અલબત તેમ કરે. તેમને અપીલની જરૂર નથી. પેટ લાગ્યું છે એ ભાઈઓને સ્વદેશીની હીલચાલને મદદ કરવા કહું છું. એવો કાયદો નથી કે તેઓ ખાદી ન પહેરે. કોઈ કાયદો નથી કે પરદેશી કાપડ પહેરવાની ફરજ પડે.

હું જાણું છું કે બ્રિટીશ માલની અને વીલાયતી બીડી પીવાની કેટલેક ઠેકાણે ફરજ પડે છે. પણ કાયદેસર તેવી ફરજ પડી શકે નહી. પોતાને હીંમત જોઈએ. સ્વતંત્ર થવા માટે મનમાં ઉદ્વેગ થવો જોઈએ.

DELIGHTFUL COMPANY 

Even today in the midst of my onerous responsibilities and heavy pre-occupations, I delight in the company of children. That brings sometimes a ray of hope in the midst of surrounding gloom, a heavy laughter after the perusal of a saddening report, and a relaxation during anxious hours.

Work is undoubtedly worship but laughter is life. Anyone who takes life too seriously must prepare himself for a miserable existence. Anyone who greets joys and sorrows with equal facility can really get the best of life.

It has been my good fortunate to have borne a temperament which adapts itself equally well to the most taxing and the light moments. It was only some years ago that I used to wrestle and sport with my grandson. Very often I indulge in less vigorous pranks with children who can afford to give me the benefit of their company. It is only so long as a man can retain the child in him that life can be free from those dark shadows which leave inevitable furrows on a man's forehead. There is nothing more disgusting than perpetual pensive brows or the wry face of curmudgeon.

આ દશા ક્યારે થઈ તે વિચારવું જોઈએ. પહેલાં હિંદુસ્તાનમાં એટલી બધી લક્ષ્મી હતી કે તેની ખ્યાતી સાંભળી દુરથી માણસો આવતા. જ્યારે આપણે આગળપડતા હતા, ત્યારે અત્યારના રાજ્ય કરનારા જંગલી હતા. તેઓ અહી વેપાર કરવા આવ્યા અને આપણામાં કુસંપનો લાભ લઈ રાજ્યકર્તા થઈ ગયા. તેમણે વારાફરતી બેમાંથી એકનો પક્ષ લીધો.

આપણે વિચારવું જોઈએ કે આપણી પર રાજ્ય કોણ કરે છે? કરોડો રૂપિયા આવકવેરા તથા મહેસુલમાં આપીએ છીએ, તે ક્યાં જાય છે? અને તેનો શો ઉપયોગ થાય છે? આપણે કોઈની પાસે સો રૂપિયા માગીએ, તો પચાસ ગાઉ ટાપુ ખાઈ દોડીએ. પણ કરોડો રૂપિયા પરદેશ જાય, તેનો વિચાર પણ કરતા નથી. એક વખત એવો હતો કે ક્ષત્રી લોકો ધર્મનું રક્ષણ કરતા. અત્યારે હિંદ વિધવા બાઈ જેવું છે. કોઈ લુંટફાટ કરવા હથિયાર રાખે છે, બાકી તમામ પ્રજા નિરાધાર છે. કરોડો રૂપિયા લુંટાઈ જાય છે, તેની સામે કોઈ થઈ શકતું નથી.

અત્યાર સુધીતો એમ મનાતું કે સરકાર આપણું રક્ષણ કરે છે. તે રામરાજ્ય છે, જેમાં વાઘ બકરી એક આરે પાણી પીએ છે. જ્યારથી પરદેશી રાજ્ય થયુ ત્યારથી સુખ મળ્યુ. જાણે કે તે પહેલાતો અહી બધી અંધાધુંધી જ હતી!

આજ સુધી અમારા મુસલમાન ભાઈઓના મનમાં એક વાત ઠસી ગઈ હતી કે, હિંદમાં વધારે સંખ્યા હિંદુઓની છે. માટે અંગ્રેજ સરકાર હોય તો આપણે આપણો હક સાચવી શકીએ. તે મુસલમાનને પહેલવહેલી ખાતરી થઈ કે હિંદુઓની દોસ્તી હોય તો અમારો ધર્મ સચવાય. આ લડતને પરિણામે જેટલા જેટલા પ્રપંચ હતા તે ખુલ્લા થયા. 

સરકાર હિંદમાં ચારે તરફથી માયા નાખી પડેલી છે. જો આપણે આપણી સ્ત્રીઓનું રક્ષણ કરવું હોય, જો દેશની ઈજ્જત સાચવવી હોય, તો આપણું રાજ્ય જોઈએ. આપણે કોઈ પારકા પર રાજ્ય કરવું નથી, પણ જેમ ફ્રેંચ લોકો ફ્રાંસમાં રાજ્ય કરે છે, જર્મન લોકો જર્મનીમાં, ઈટાલીના લોકો ઈટાલીમાં, તેમ હિંદના લોકો હિંદમાં રાજ્ય કરે, એટલુ જ આપણે જોઈએ છીએ. આજે તો હિંદનો કોઈ પણ માણસ-હિંદુ કે મુસલમાન આખા જગતમાં માન સાથે પગ મુકી શકે તેમ નથી.

THE IDOL OF MILLIONS

It was a tragic hour for the whole nation when on the morning of the 15th of December 1950 the life of the Iron Man of India was slowly ebbing away. The Birlas can rightly feel proud that both Gandhiji and Sardar Patel spent their last moments in their houses, one in Delhi.

the other in Bombay. As the Sardar’s body lay in state millions of people swarmed Birla House. An ocean of human heads bowed in sorrow bore testimony to the love and affection the people had for the departed leader.

The Last journey was a mammoth procession; headed by a cross section of the country's leadership, a surging mass of humanity chanting Gandhiji's favourite hymn "Raghupati Raghava Rajaram" wended their way to cremate the mortal remains of the unflinching freedom fighter and the architect of united India. The story of a great life had come to a close. As the President observed at the cremation, only his body could be consumed by fire; his fame would remain immortal.

He created men out of straw and not only emancipated a country in fetters but re-built it on firm foundations. He has life his indelible imprint in the country's annals as the consolidator of the nation's hardwon freedom. He is the Bismark of India. To millions of Indians brought up on feeling of helplessness and inferiority, he is the symbol of self-confident strength, the champion who could pick up a gauntlet with an astounding audacity and gling it in the face of the challenger. The whole of india is proud of him. He is the model to every aspirant to political fame, for strategy and tectics.An indomitable man of action, a born leader of men, he has set such standards of courage, industry, honesty and above all, the capacity to undergo untold suffering for the cause one has espoused that we could do nothing better than strive to live up to them.

હિંદુસ્તાનમાં સ્ત્રીઓને દવાદારૂનું ભાન નથી. પ્રસૂતિમાં પડેલી બાઈની શી સ્થિતિ હોવી જોઈએ, જન્મેલા બાળકની માવજત કેમ કરવી જોઈએ, એનું કોઈ પ્રકારનું ભાન આપણી બહેનોને નથી. કાંઠામાં આસપાસ કોઈ માંદુ થાય, સ્ત્રીઓ માટે પ્રસૂતિની સગવડ જોઈએ,તેને માટે આ ખાત-મુહુર્ત કર્યુ છે. આપણી પાસે પહેલાંની કુશળ દાયણો રહી નથી. આજના યુગને અનુકુળએ અંગેનું જ્ઞાન આપવું જોઈએ. 

લોકોએ કસ્તુરબા સ્મારક માટે એક કરોડનો ફાળો કરવાનો નિશ્ચય કર્યો. એકને બદલે સવા દોઢ કરોડ સુધી ફાળો પહોચ્યો, એમા પણ તમે સાથ આપ્યો. આશાભાઈએ એ કામ ઉપાડ્યુ. એ તો બહાદુર માણસ છે. એ પણ એક વાર તમારાથી વધારે મુંઝવણમાં હતા. જમીનો ગયા પછી ગાંધીજી સાથે હુ આવ્યો હતો. ગામની એક બાઈએ જતાં જતાં એકબે વચનો કહ્યાં તે અમે સાંભળી લીધાં, પણ આશાભાઈને બહુ ખોટું લાગ્યું. પણ તમારી જમીનો પાછી આવી એટલે હવે તમને વિશ્વાસ બેઠો.

જમીનો આપણે ગુમાવી તે કેવી રીતે ગુમાવી એ વિચારો. આપણામાં ફાટફુટ હતી. ગામમાં ખટપટ થઈ. થોડા લોકો ગામના પણ મળ્યા પરદેશી સરકાર ફાટફુટથી જ રાજ ચલાવી શકે. ગોરા સાહેબે લખી આપ્યુ. પણ એ તો એનું રાજ ચાલે ત્યાં સુધીનું જ હોય ને? અમે તો પહેલેથી કહેતા હતા કે હિંદુસ્તાનમાં હિંદીઓ જ રાજ કરી શકે. તમે પાછા ગામના ભળીતો ગયા છો પણ દિલ એક છે કે જુદા તે ખબર નથી.

પંચાયતી રાજ એ જ સાચું સ્વરાજ છે. બધાએ એક બાપની પ્રજા તરીકે સરખે સરખા થઈને રહેવુ જોઈએ. કોઈ ઊંચનીચ ન હોય. ગામમાં બાળા જતી હોય તો કોઈ કુનજર ન કરે. કોઈ અપશબ્દ ન કહે. આપણે પોલીસની અપેક્ષા નથી રાખી. આજે તો કઠણ વખત છે. કોઈ એકબીજાની નિંદા ઈર્ષા ન કરે.

આજે એકના પાંચ આપી બહારથી અનાજ લાવવું પડે છે. ખેડુતને પકવેલું પુરુ મળતુ નથી. ખેતીવાડી દુનિયામાં ભાગી ગઈ છે. બધે જ ખેડુતો પાસેથી અનાજ લઈ લેવામાં આવે છે. જર્મન જેવી બહાદુર પ્રજાના માણસો પણ ભૂખને લીધે ટપટપ મરી જાય છે.  આપણે સ્વરાજ્ય તો મેળવ્યું પણ હજી એ ઓળખ્યું નથી. ગામમાં કોઈ પણ માણસ ભુખ્યો ન રહે. ભૂખ્યો હોય તો આપણા રોટલા પર કાપ મૂકીએ પણ કોઈ ભૂખ્યો ન રહે. એ સ્વરાજ માટે મહેનત કરીએ છીએ. આમાં તમારો સાથ જોઈએ. તમને હું તો હમેશા કહેતો આવ્યો છું કે ખેડુતો કોરટકચેરીએ જાય છે, સ્ટાંપ ફી ભરે છે, એ શા માટે? પંચ મારફતે કજિયા પતાવો તો નાના, મોટા, ગરીબ સૌને ઢાંકી શકો. અમારી સ્વરાજની કલ્પનાએ છે કે સૌને સારવાર ને મદદ મળે. એ અમારી અપેક્ષા છે. તમે બધાએ મારૂ સ્વાગત કર્યુ એ માટે આભાર માનું છું. 

તમને ફરી ચેતવણી આપું છું કે એક રાજ જાય છે અને બીજું આવે છે, તે વખતે સંપીને રહેશો. એકબીજાની રક્ષા કરશો તો આપણે કલ્પેલું સ્વરાજ આવવાનું છે. ભગવાન આપણને એવું સ્વરાજ પચાવવાની શક્તિ આપો.
