The Miracle that Sardar Wrought

Shri Mahadev Desai, in his famous book The Story of Bardoli gives this fascinating account of the extraordinary forbearance of an illiterate old woman who was ready to lose her all at the call of the Sardar :

One of the japti officers ordered his men to lay siege to a village. Apparently it was a single house, but really, it was one whole street that was besieged, as the armed policemen posted in front of the house with a Circle Inspector and the two Pathans who guarded the back door were ready to pounce upon any door that opened within their beat. These men were posted there at 2.30 am and were there until 6 pm when we visited the place. The house belonged to an old Government pensioner aged about 75. He had not even signed the Satyagraha pledge. But the officer thought that the best way to coerce the prisoner was to put his house under siege. The old man's wife was sitting at a window on the storey of the house, rosary in hand, and repeating Ramanama. 'I hope, old mother, you are not afraid,' asked the Sardar from outside her house. 'Why should I be afraid, when you are there to protect us?' she replied. 'Not I, but Rama,' said the Sardar correcting her.'Indeed Ramji is Merciful,' she said nodding assent. 'But how do you like these Pathans and Policemen at your doors?' asked one of us. 'The are quite welcome. But for them the Sardar would not have graced my house.'

Not an ill word, nor one of anger, though the old woman had not been able to go out of her house for those fifteen hours!

સરદારે ઘડેલ ચમત્કાર

શ્રી મહાદેવ દેસાઇએ તેમના પ્રખ્યાત પુસ્તક ધ સ્ટોરી ઓફ બારડોલીમાં એક અભણ વૃદ્ધ મહિલાની અસાધારણ મૌનનો આ રસપ્રદ અહેવાલ આપ્યો છે જે સરદારના કહેવાથી પોતાનું બધુ ગુમાવવા તૈયાર હતી:

જપ્તીના એક અધિકારીએ તેના માણસોને આદેશ આપ્યો કે તે ગામને ઘેરો ઘેરે. દેખીતી રીતે તે એક જ મકાન હતું, પરંતુ ખરેખર, તે એક આખી શેરી હતી જેને ઘેરી લેવામાં આવી હતી, કારણ કે ઘરની સામે સશસ્ત્ર પોલીસ કર્મચારીઓ એક સર્કલ ઇન્સ્પેક્ટર અને પાછળના દરવાજા પર રક્ષક બનેલા બે પઠાણ કોઈપણ દરવાજાને પછાડીને અંદર ખોલવા તૈયાર હતા. આ માણસો ત્યાં સવારે ૨ વાગ્યે તૈનાત કરવામાં આવ્યા હતા અને અમે સ્થળની મુલાકાત લીધાં ત્યાં સુધી સાંજના ૬ વાગ્યા સુધી ત્યાં હતા. આ ઘર લગભગ ૭૫ વર્ષના વૃદ્ધ સરકારી પેન્શનરનું હતું. તેમણે સત્યાગ્રહના પ્રતિજ્ઞાપત્ર પર સહી પણ કરી ન હતી. પરંતુ અધિકારીએ વિચાર્યું કે કેદીને મજબૂર કરવાની શ્રેષ્ઠ રીત એ છે કે તેના ઘરને ઘેરા હેઠળ રાખવું. વૃદ્ધાની પત્ની ઘરની બારી પર એક બારી પાસે બેઠેલી હતી, હાથમાં ગુલાબ અને રામનું  નામ જપન કરતી હતી. 'મને આશા છે કે વૃદ્ધ માતા, તમે ડરશો નહીં,' સરદારને તેના ઘરની બહારથી પૂછ્યું. 'જ્યારે તમે અમારી રક્ષા કરવા માટે હોવ ત્યારે મારે કેમ ડરવું જોઈએ?' તેણીએ જવાબ આપ્યો. 'હું નહીં, રામ,' સરદારે તેને સુધારતા કહ્યું, 'રામ ભગવાન દયાળુ છે,' તેણીએ સંમતિ આપતા કહ્યું. 'પણ તમને તમારા દરવાજા પર આ પઠાણ અને પોલીસકર્મી કેવી ગમશે?' અમને એક પૂછ્યું. 'તેમનું ખૂબ સ્વાગત છે. પણ જો તેઓ ન હોત તો સરદારે મારા ઘર પર કૃપા કરી ન હોત.'

કોઈ હતાશાના શબ્દો ન હતા, કે કોઈ ગુસ્સો નથી, તેમ છતાં વૃદ્ધ સ્ત્રી તે પંદર કલાકથી ઘરની બહાર જઇ શક્યા ન હતા!
