Vithalbhai and Vallabhbhai's cherished dream to go to England

Vithalbhai and Vallabhbhai's cherished dream to go to England

It was Vallabhbhai's cherished dream to go to England and call at the Bar. Within three years of his setting up practice at Borsad, Vallabhbhai made enough money to pursue his studies in England. So in 1905, he wrote for passage to Thomas Cook & Sons. The Company's last reply addressed as "V. J. Patel" fell into the hands of his elder brother Vithalbhai, as both of them bore the same initials. Vithalbhai too was toying with the idea of going to England. And this was the golden opportunity! he, therefore, persuaded the younger brother to stave off his plan till he himself returned from England after calling at the Bar. Vallabhbhai not only surrendered his passport to Vithalbhai but also met his entire expenses in England. Not only that, he invited Vithalbhai's wife to stay with them and when he saw that his sister-in-law and his wife would not carry on in peace, he sent his own wife to her parents till Vithalbhai returned from England.

Poona,
9th October 1945

My Dear Jehangir,

It is more than three years since we met, i.e., before my arrest in August 1942 in Bombay. Since my release, I have been mostly confined to this clinic except for short intervals when urgent public duty calls me away. I wanted to meet you when I was in Bombay for three days on the occasion of the A. I. C. C. meeting. But I could not find time owing to pressure of work.

I am writing this to you in the hope that you may be able to assist me in an urgent matter of public importance. In the coming Central Assembly Elections, the Congress has to set up two candidates from the Bombay City General Constituency. There is no difficulty in getting both the seats; but I want your help in securing the services of an expert. If you can permit and persuada Dr. John Matthai (Economist, Member, India Tariff Board, Joined Tata Sons - 1940) to agree to stand as a Congress nominee and contest one of these seats on its behalf, you would be doing a great service to the country's cause His services in the Central Assembly at this critical juncture would be of immense value. If he would accept a Congress ticket, I would see that there is no difficulty in winning the seat in the elections.

As the date of nominations is drawing near, I would request you to send me a reply as soon as possible.

I have written this on my own behalf, but if you agree, I will place it before my Committee.

Yours Sincerely,
Vallabhbhai Patel

Shri J. R. D. Tata,
Bombay

Vallabhbhai’s Stirring Address at Bhil Conference at Dahod

Vallabhbhai’s Stirring Address at Bhil Conference at Dahod

Bombay Chronicle, 8 February 1921

Mr. Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel began his inspiring speech during a homely manner so on be intelligible to the illiterate Bhils.

He mentioned the removal of the Guru which he termed as disgraceful on the a part of the officers responsible. Government officers, he said, were trying their best to stop the holding of the conference by all questionable means. The action of the govt by rousing the Guru in the dark and removing him by night mail without previously informing and without allowing him to ascertain his child are often anything but brave. He rejoiced at the very fact that no resistance was offered, though his most devoted followers were present in hundreds. This was a step which ensured our moral victory.

Mr. Sardar Patel continuing appealed to the people, to withdraw all moral support from the govt which was liable for numerous sins.

Appealing to Bhils, he said, that that they had no reason to be scared of anybody within the world. Their wants were few, their abode was with tigers. Why need they be scared of anything. But he said that they had missed their right path by contracting the habits of drink, by occasional thefts, had no reason to be scared of anybody in forced labour. He exhorted them to resist to the last at any cost.

Vithalbhai's (V. J. Patel) question whether it was advisable for him to join the Home Rule League.

Vithalbhai's ( V. J. Patel) question whether it was advisable for him to join the Home Rule League.

23rd June 1918

Bhaishri Vithalbhai

I have your letter. I for one would suggest that you should better remain out of the League and do whatever service you can individually. The Home Rule League is at present in an unenviable position, not because of any pressures from outside, but from its own many internal troubles. They (the Leaguers ) have not been able to make their choice whether to plump for obstruction or co-operation. They have harassed the Government more than enough by now. What is now needed is to abstain from agitation and do some constructive work. Till that change is made, the League’s power of serving the country is not going to develop any further. If you want to join the League with the definite object of turning its activities into the channel of solid service, not agitation merely, you may certainly join it. But your entry into the institution with a view to crossing swords with everyone small or big will be very unwelcome and harmful to the Leaguers. It is, to my mind, nothing but downright bad faith to join an institution just in order to wreck it. If you can pick up the art of keeping up good health, even that will be a great service to the country.

How do you view Vallabhbhai’s new profession ? He has become a Recruiting Sergeant.
