WHY I FOLLOWED GANDHIJI Many call me a blind devotee of Gandhiji. I wish that in fact I had the strength to become his blind devotee but that, alas is not the case. I claim to have average intelligence and understanding. I have seen something of the world, so it is not likely that I would follow this half-naked person like a mad man or without any understanding.

Many call me a blind devotee of Gandhiji. I wish that in fact I had the strength to become his blind devotee but that, alas is not the case. I claim to have average intelligence and understanding. I have seen something of the world, so it is not likely that I would follow this half-naked person like a mad man or without any understanding. I was a member of profession in which I could perhaps have become rich by misleading many, but I gave up the profession, for I learnt from this man that that was not the way in which I could do good to the peasants. I have been with him almost since he came to India, and so long as I live and he lives, that relationship will continue. Even so, I keep him away from my work. We are not likely to regain our capacity for initiative and independent action, if we merely look to him for leadership and wait for his guidance. How can we hope to achieve anything if we are always dependent upon assistance from someone? When he was ill in Mysore, many people sent him telegraphs urging him to come to Gujarat for flood-relief work. He enquired of me whether he should. I told him that for ten years he had been advising Gujarat, and that if he wished to see whether Gujarat had assimilated his advice, he should not come to Gujarat. In the same way, I told him to go to Bardoli only after I was arrested. Our chief defect is lack of discipline and organization. We do not know how to be soldiers. We have not accustomed ourselves to carrying out orders. In this age of individual liberty, we have mistaken licence for liberty.

ઘણા મને ગાંધીજીનો અંધ ભક્ત કહે છે. હું ઈચ્છું છું કે હકીકતમાં મને તેમના અંધ ભક્ત બનવાની શક્તિ મળે, પરંતુ અફસોસ તેવુ નથી. હું મારી પાસે સરેરાશ બુધ્ધિ અને સમજ હોવાનો દાવો કરું છું. મે દુનિયા જોઈ છે, અને તેથી આ સંભવ નથી કે હું આ અર્ધ નગ્ન વ્યક્તિને પાગલ માણસની જેમ અથવા કોઈ સમજણ વગર અનુસરુ. હું એવા વ્યવસાયનો સભ્ય હતો કે જેમાં કદાચ હુ ઘણાને ગેરમાર્ગે દોરી હું શ્રીમંત બની શક્યો હોત, પરંતુ મે આ વ્યવસાય છોડી દીધો, કારણકે મે આ માણસ પાસેથી જાણ્યુ કે આ એ રસ્તો નથી જેના થકી હું ખેડુતોનું ભલુ કરી શકુ. તેઓ ભારતમાં આવ્યા ત્યારથી જ હું તેમની સાથે રહ્યો છું, અને જ્યાં સુધી હું જીવીશ અને તે જીવે ત્યાં સુધી આ સંબંધ રહેશે. તેમ છતાં હું તેમને મારા કામથી દૂર રાખું છું. જો આપણે ફક્ત નેતૃત્વ માટે તેમની તરફ ધ્યાન રાખીએ તો આપણે પહેલ અને સ્વતંત્ર કાર્યવાહીની ક્ષમતા ફરીથી મેળવી શકીશું નહી આ માટે તેમના માર્ગદર્શનની જ રાહ જોવી પડે. આપણે હંમેશા કોઈની સહાયતા પર નિર્ભર હોઈએ તો આપણે કાંઈ પણ પ્રાપ્ત કરવાની આશા રાખી શકીએ? જ્યારે તેઓ મૈસુરમાં બીમાર હતા, ત્યારે ઘણા લોકોએ તેમને ટેલીગ્રામ મોકલી વિનંતી કરી કે તેઓએ પૂર-રાહત કાર્ય માટે ગુજરાત આવવું. આથી તેમણે મને પુછ્યુ6 કે શું કરવું જોઈએ? ત્યારે મે કહ્યુ કે દસ વર્ષથી તેઓ ગુજરાતને સલાહ આપે છે, અને જો તેમણે જાણવું હોય કે આ સલાહ મુજબ ગુજરાત અનુસરે છે કે નહી તો તમારે ગુજરાત ન જવુ જોઈએ. આવી જ રીતે મે તેમને કહ્યુ હતુ કે મારી બારડોલીમાં ધરપકડ થાય ત્યાર પછી જ તેમણે બારડોલી આવવું. શિસ્ત અને સંગઠનનો અભાવ એજ આપણી મુખ્ય ખામી છે. સૈનિક કેવી રીતે બનવું તે આપણે નથી જાણતા. આપણે હુકમ આપવા માટે ટેવાયેલ નથી. વ્યક્તિગત સ્વતંત્રતાના આ યુગમાં, સ્વતંત્રની પરવાનગી ભુલ ભરેલ છે.
