Congress G.H.Q. seized and 100 arrests
Volunteers lose most of their leaders
Dramatic measures which may effectively cripple the power of the Indian National Congress to carry on its campaign against the Government were taken at Bombay early this morning.
Over one hundred arrests of prominent Congressmen, including the Honourable Vithalbhai Patel, a former president of the Legislative Assembly, were made.
The headquarters of Congress were seized, as well as the headquarters of the volunteers, and the Bombay Congress and its allied bodies were declared unlawful.
The arrests and seizures were under the new ordinances concerning Bombay which came into force yesterday, and the scope of the Government's operations has completely stunned Congress supporters.
"War cabinets" and leaders of the Congress had been appointed to carry on during the absence in prison of the recognised leaders, but the thousands of volunteers who have enrolled under Congress are now practically leaderless.
The Government, it is learned, had intended to extend to Bombay Congressman the chance of standing allot from the activities of Congress, but the decision of the letter to picket British cloth shops to-day seems to have precipitated the arrests.
The arrests
The arrests were carried out with surprising suddenness, secrecy, and rapidly by fully armed police, who at a pre-arranged time were dispatched in motor lorries to various quarters.
The names and addresses of the Congressman wanted had been drawn up beforehand and arrests were made simultaneously in every part of the city. There was not the slightest hitch in the arrangements and shortly afterwards the prisoners began to arrive at headquarters.
Mr. Vithalbhai Patel, a brother of Vallabhbhai Patel, a recent President of the Congress, who was arrested yesterday, was one of the first to be apprehended by the police, and others included Mr. Naagin da vice president of the local Congress executive, who was the Congress organiser, and who was responsible for the arrangements for the last civil disobedience movement.
Eight women also were numbered among the prisoners.
Raid on headquarters
The Police later raided Congress Hall, the headquarters of the Congress, which had already been denuded of most of its trapping's by officials, hauled down the Congress flag, and ran up the Union Jack before turning their attention to the headquarters of the volunteers which were seized.
Apart from the crushing effect of the arrests of the most prominent Congressmen, the severest blow against Congress is the proclamation by which it is declared unlawful.
This follows swiftly upon similar action in Calcutta and the Madras Presidency, and means that Congress will not in future be allowed to assemble.
Congress still has a leader in the person of Dr. M. Ansari, the leader of the Moslems in the Congress movement, who has been appointed President in succession to Mr. Rajendra Prasad, who is now in Prison with Mr. Vallabhbhai Patel, whom he succeeded.

સરકાર સામેની ઝુંબેશ ચલાવવા માટે ભારતીય રાષ્ટ્રીય કોંગ્રેસની શક્તિને અસરકારક રીતે અપ્રગટ કરી શકે તેવા નાટકીય પગલાં આજે સવારે બોમ્બેમાં લેવામાં આવ્યા હતા.
વિધાનસભાની ભૂતપૂર્વ પ્રમુખ માનનીય વિઠ્ઠભાઈ પટેલ સહિત અગ્રણી કોંગ્રેસમેનની એકથી વધુ ધરપકડો કરવામાં આવી હતી.
કૉંગ્રેસના વડામથકને, તેમજ સ્વયંસેવકોનું વડુમથક કબજે કરવામાં આવ્યું હતું, અને બોમ્બે કોંગ્રેસ અને તેની સંબંધિત સંસ્થાઓને ગેરકાનૂની જાહેર કરવામાં આવી હતી.
ધરપકડ અને હુમલાઓ બોમ્બે સંબંધિત નવા અધિનિયમ હેઠળ ગઈ હતી જે ગઈકાલે અમલમાં આવી હતી, અને સરકારના કાર્યક્ષેત્રના અવકાશથી કોંગ્રેસ સમર્થકોને સંપૂર્ણપણે આશ્ચર્ય થયું હતું.

સરકાર ને શીખ મળી છે કે, કૉંગ્રેસની પ્રવૃત્તિઓમાંથી ફાળવણીની તક માટે બોમ્બે કોંગ્રેસમેન સુધી વિસ્તરણ કરવાનો ઇરાદો હતો, પરંતુ આજે બ્રિટીશ કાપડની દુકાનોને પકડવાની પત્રના નિર્ણયની ધરપકડ કરવામાં આવી હોવાનું લાગે છે.
ધરપકડ
આ ધરપકડ આશ્ચર્યજનક અચાનક, ગુપ્તતા અને ઝડપથી સશસ્ત્ર પોલીસ દ્વારા કરવામાં આવી હતી, જે અગાઉ ગોઠવાયેલા સમયે મોટર લોરીમાં વિવિધ ક્વાર્ટર્સમાં મોકલવામાં આવી હતી.
કોંગ્રેસના નામો અને સરનામા અગાઉથી તૈયાર કરવામાં આવ્યાં હતાં અને શહેરના દરેક ભાગમાં ધરપકડ કરવામાં આવી હતી. ગોઠવણમાં સહેજ હચમચી ન હતી અને ટૂંક સમયમાં જ કેદીઓએ મુખ્ય મથક પર પહોંચવાનું શરૂ કર્યું.
કોંગ્રેસના તાજેતરના રાષ્ટ્રપતિ, વલ્લભભાઈ પટેલના ભાઇ શ્રી વિઠ્ઠભાઈ પટેલ, જેમને ગઇકાલે ધરપકડ કરવામાં આવી હતી, પોલીસ દ્વારા ધરપકડ કરવામાં આવેલી પ્રથમ વ્યક્તિમાંની એક હતી અને અન્યમાં સ્થાનિક કોંગ્રેસના વહીવટી અધિકારી શ્રી નગીનદા, કોંગ્રેસના આયોજક કોણ હતા, અને છેલ્લા નાગરિક અવજ્ઞા ચળવળની ગોઠવણ માટે જવાબદાર કોણ હતા.
કેદીઓમાં આઠ સ્ત્રીઓ પણ ક્રમાંકિત થઈ હતી.
મુખ્ય મથક પર હુમલો
પોલીસે બાદમાં કૉંગ્રેસનું મુખ્ય મથક, કૉંગ્રેસ હૉલ પર હુમલો કર્યો હતો, જે અધિકારીઓ દ્વારા તેના મોટાભાગના ફાંસીની અસ્વીકાર કરાઈ હતી, કોંગ્રેસના ધ્વજને હાંકી કાઢયો હતો, અને સ્વયંસેવકોના મુખ્ય મથક તરફ ધ્યાન કેન્દ્રિત કરતા પહેલા યુનિયન જેક દોડી ગયો હતો. જપ્ત
સૌથી જાણીતા કોંગ્રેસમેનની ધરપકડની અસરકારક અસર ઉપરાંત, કૉંગ્રેસ વિરુદ્ધનો આક્રમક ઘોષણા તે ઘોષણા છે જેના દ્વારા તે ગેરકાનૂની જાહેર કરવામાં આવે છે.
આ કલકત્તા અને મદ્રાસ પ્રેસિડેન્સીમાં સમાન કાર્યવાહી પર ઝડપથી થાય છે, અને તેનો અર્થ એ છે કે ભવિષ્યમાં કોંગ્રેસને મંજૂરી આપવામાં આવશે નહીં.
કોંગ્રેસી ચળવળમાં મુસ્લિમોના નેતા ડૉ. એમ. અનસારીના નેતામાં કૉંગ્રેસ હજી પણ નેતા છે, જે શ્રી રાજેન્દ્ર પ્રસાદને વારસામાં પ્રમુખ તરીકે નિયુક્ત કરવામાં આવ્યા છે, જેઓ હવે વલ્લભભાઈ પટેલ સાથે જેલમાં છે, જે સફળ થયા.
